About us

Founded in 2006, the International Association of Universities (IAU) is an international non-governmental organization.  The IAU head-office is located in Ankara, Turkey.  Initially its operations started as a cooperation action of the international universities founded in Azerbaijan in 1993, in Turkmenistan and Georgia in 1995, in Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan in 1996 and Albania in 2007.  Active individuals in these universities’ managerial staff and their rectors came together in Turkey pioneering the foundation of the International Association of Universities.  Since 2006, their activities have been  continuing under the framework of the IAU and the IAU aims to be a worldwide association of higher education institutions.

The IAU objects to foster greater collaboration and new partnerships within and outside the higher education community to help  universities anticipate and address the challenges of the 21st century and contribute to a stronger nation and a better world.

It brings together institutions and organisations from  America, Europe, Asia, Africa and Australia for reflection and action on common concerns and collaborates with various international, regional and national bodies active in higher education.  Its services are available on the priority basis to members but also to organisations, institutions and authorities concerned with higher education, as well as to individual policy and decision-makers, specialists, administrators, teachers, researchers and students.  Members of the Association are International Universities involved in teaching and research, and other organisations active in higher education and research.

The IAU plays an essential role in shaping tomorrow’s National and Global higher education and research landscape thanks to its unique knowledge of the sector and the diversity of its members.
